The results of this survey show that perioperative use of Metacam(R) in dogs is a safe and efficacious method to prevent postoperative pain. During the surgical procedures no problems were registerd regarding anesthesia, increased bleeding tendency and impaired wound-healing. The single pre-emptive injection of meloxicam was well tolerated without any adverse reactions in all patients. The dogs behaved less anxious, were more active and showed less pain. Compared to the surgical procedures without analgesic treatment in previous years we found a more quite recovery when treated preemptive with meloxicam. Postoperative analgesic treatment with Metacam(R) oral suspension was continued respectively advised depending on the degree of pain caused by the surgical procedure. 2127 dogs underwent orthopaedic surgery where 1587 dogs received soft-tissue surgery. From January 1998 to July 20013714 dogs were given pre-emptive analgesia with meloxicam. The aim of the study was to evaluate the practical routine of Metacam(R) in our clinic. Meloxicam (Metacam(R)) is licensed for perioperative use and showed in several clinical trials a good efficacy and a good tolerability. Perioperative analgesia is sensible not only for ethical aspects but also with regard to several positive medical reasons (Hellebrekers 2001).
